Housing Opportunities of Warsaw and United Way are looking for volunteers for Day of Caring on Aug. 15.
The event, in its third year, is aimed at providing repairs to homes of elderly, disabled and low-income homeowners in Kosciusko County. HOW housing counselor Renea Salyer said volunteers will make repairs on 62 houses this year. To complete all the repairs during the one-day event, Salyer said HOW will need more than 200 volunteers.
Salyer said about 100 volunteers from several local churches, Grace College and others in the community have signed up to help. Volunteers will work on tasks like painting, trimming bushes and trees, cleaning out gutters and washing windows at houses in Claypool, Warsaw, Syracuse, Mentone and Burket.
"We also need some skilled workers who can build five ramps," she said.
Last year, volunteers worked at about 20 houses. "It's really grown," Salyer said. "That's why we're putting out some feelers to get some more volunteers."
Day of Caring work will begin at 8 a.m. Lunch will be served at noon and work will resume at 1 p.m. until 5 p.m. At 6:30 p.m. volunteers and residents of the houses repaired will attend a program at the amphitheater in Winona Lake.
