Housing Opportunities of Warsaw Partners with Lake City Bank to Make Roof Repairs

Posted
Warsaw resident Judy Cain received roof repairs on her home Wednesday with the help of grant funding.
Lake City Bank helped administer the funds that were provided by Federal Home Loan Bank of Indianapolis for roof repair to Cain’s home at 53 EMS C17 Lane on Chapman Lake.
Cain was awarded $5,225 in Neighborhood Impact Funds from the Federal Home Loan Bank of Indianapolis. The additional $925 was paid for out of Housing Opportunities of Warsaw’s Emergency Home Repair Fund.
Lake City Bank assisted in administering the funds. Lake City is a member bank with Federal Home Loan Bank, allowing Lake City to access grant funds for housing projects for low- to moderate-income families.
Lake City Bank submits requests to Federal Home Loan Bank to consider granting the funds to make the home repairs through the Neighborhood Impact Program.
Since April 1, 2013, Lake City Bank and Housing Opportunities have been awarded $37,366 in program funds for six families in Kosciusko County.
Housing Opportunities of Warsaw writes the specifications for the repairs to be made for families and make sure they meet income qualifications.
JayH Construction, Etna Green, is the contractor for the project and began roofing work on Cain’s home Tuesday morning and will be finished with the work tonight.
There is water damage on the bathroom ceiling that will be replaced, and Cain’s water heater also will be replaced.
Judy, 76, and her deceased husband Charles moved to Kosciusko County in 1975 after they both had careers as narcotics officers in Redondo Beach, Calif.
Charles was injured in the line of duty.
They opened their own business in 1998 called the Canvas Clinic, but had to close shop to attend to her husband due to health issues.
Her husband passed away in 2006, and she has lived in the home by herself since then.
Now a widow, Judith is on a fixed income. Her roof began leaking and after calling contractors to repair it, she realized she didn’t have the funds.
JayH Construction referred her to Housing Opportunities to see if she would qualify for a grant, and she did.
“It means the world to me to get this work done,” Cain said.
Aaron Miller, JayH Construction co-owner, said the business is glad to do the work.
Miller and five employees worked on re-shingling Cain’s roof Wednesday.
“It is worth a lot to be able to help needy people and makes me feel good that we are able to provide this service,” Miller said.
Ralph Villalon, Community Reinvestment Act outreach coordinator for Lake City Bank, said the bank is happy to assist Federal Home Loan Bank in administering the funds for the roof repair.
Villalon said the government requires banks to provide outreach to families of low- to moderate-income levels that are in need of home repairs.
Being able to get the funds through the Federal Home Loan Bank provides Lake City Bank Community Reinvestment Act credit.
