Higgins Named Veteran Of The MonthRichard “Dick” Higgins was named Kosciusko County Veteran of the Month for January. He was honored at this morning’s county commissioners meeting. Higgins (second from right) is pictured with (L to R) Rich Maron, county veterans affairs officer; and Commissioners Bob Conley and Cary Groninger. Higgins was drafted into the Navy before graduating from Burket High School, but was allowed to finish school and work his family farm while his father recovered from a broken leg. He was stationed on the USS Trego and went to the Pacific Theatre, where he witnessed a Kamikaze pilot hit the cruiser USS Louisville. While in the Navy, he was awarded the World War II Victory Medal, the American Area Campaign Medal and the Asiatic Pacific Area Campaign Medal.
