Hearing Set Saturday To Discuss Lakeland Regional Sewer District

Posted
NORTH WEBSTER - State and local officials will hear comments and questions from the public at a hearing Saturday in North Webster about a proposed regional sewer district in the Barbee Lake area.

The Kosciusko County Commissioners and County Council passed a resolution in favor of the district in July 2006. The proposed sewer district, known as the Lakeland Sewer District, would include property around lakes in the Barbee chain, including Kuhn, Big Barbee, Little Barbee, Irish, Sechrist, Sawmill, Banning and Shoe.

The Indiana Department of Environmental Management will decide whether the sewer district will be formed. IDEM officials will hear comments and answer questions at Saturday's hearing and also accept written comments until Sept. 8.

If the sewer district is formed, a local board will decide which properties are required to connect with the sewer system. David Doctor, North Webster, appointed by the county to head up the effort to establish the sewer district, submitted recommendations for the composition of the regional sewer board to the county commissioners Aug. 7. Doctor recommended himself, David Tyler, Leesburg; Daniel Lee, Warsaw; Jim Haney, Leesburg; and Bob Weaver, Kosciusko County Health Department administrator; join one county commissioner and one county councilman on the board.

The hearing is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. at the North Webster Community Center, 301 N. Main St.

The public may submit written comments to IDEM representative Lynne Newlon at 100 N. Senate Ave., MC 65-40 IGCN-1255 Indianapolis, IN 46204-2251.
