Health Department Reminds Residents Of Mosquito Borne Illnesses

Staff Report-
With the recent spring rains, the Kosciusko County Health Department reminds the community about the upcoming possibility of mosquito-borne illnesses. The best-known illness in the area is West Nile Virus. Rains provide the water needed, and also help create the breeding pools needed for mosquitoes. Now is the time for control measures to reduce the standing water that provides mosquito breeding grounds. Mosquitos can breed in any water left standing for four or more days. Take the time now to review your property and yard for possible mosquito breeding sites. Check gutters for trapped standing water. Dispose of or empty containers that can collect standing water. Maintain pools with proper chlorination and maintenance. Repair or install screens to keep mosquitoes out of your home. As summer continues, remember to protect yourself and your family from mosquito bites. Use insect repellant according to the manufacturer’s recommendations. Wear long sleeves and pants when weather permits to avoid mosquito bites. Use mosquito netting over strollers or when camping. Avoid spending time outside at dawn, dusk and early evening when mosquitoes bite most often. The Indiana State Department of Health has already begun testing mosquitos for West Nile Virus. Although so far this year there have not been any mosquito testing pools confirming West Nile Virus in Indiana, it is early in the season, and it is expected West Nile will be identified during the mosquito season.
