Warsaw Mayor Ernie Wiggins welcomed a group of approximately 50 individuals from throughout Kosciusko County Thursday at Center Lake Pavilion.
They learned about the benefits to a community of having one safe, convenient location where victims of family violence and sexual abuse can get all the help they need under one roof.
Attendees included representatives from local schools, churches, social services, health care, corporate entities, elected officials and numerous law enforcement officers from area towns.
Ann DeLaney, executive director of The Julian Center in Indianapolis, was the keynote speaker. Sgt. Dawn Higgins, a member of the Domestic Violence Unit of the Indianapolis Police Department, also was in attendance.
DeLaney gave an overview of the growth pattern of The Julian Center since 2000 when it moved into its new facility which is easily accessible and very visible on Meridian Street.
She talked about their close working relationship with elected officials, law enforcement, the judicial system, and numerous partnerships with their entire community.
DeLaney stressed that, at The Julian Center, the victim comes first, second and third. Her responsibilities include overseeing the numerous advocacy, counseling and educational programs the facility provides to the women and children who are victims of domestic violence and sexual assault. Although statistics for the Indianapolis vicinity may appear to be extremely high compared to a rural community such as Warsaw, DeLaney said we must all realize, recognize and take action to help women and children in our own communities who are victims of violent crimes.
Future meetings will be held to further discuss the possibility of a one-stop center in Kosciusko County. Anyone interested in learning more about this concept can contact Becky Moreno, Victim Assistance Coordinator, at the Warsaw Police Department, 574-372-9539, or by e-mail bam@kconline.com.
