Grimm's Goal Lifts Lady Tigers To WinOne goal was all it took for Class 3A No. 10 Warsaw on Thursday.
The Lady Tigers soccer team scored in the first half and played stellar defense for the 1-0 win over NorthWood in a Northern Lakes Conference match at the Tiger Soccer Complex.
Warsaw’s lone goal came in the 26th minute after being awarded a free kick.
The Lady Tigers seized opportunity as Audrey Grimm headed the ball in the net on an assist from Anna Grill.
“(Grill) gave a great ball in and Audrey Grimm got on the end of it, and it was a solid goal,” said Warsaw coach Jon Hoover. “I wish we would have had more, but it was a fantastic goal.”
Hoover credited NorthWood goalie Kira Robinson with making exceptional saves – 15 out of Warsaw’s 16 shots on goal – in the net.
However, he also said his team will work on ball placement.
“She did a great job, and at times we hit it very hard but we hit it right at her,” Hoover said.
Meanwhile, Warsaw’s Kaylee Patton had a lonely night in the net with no shots on goal from NorthWood (2-1, 0-1 NLC).
The Lady Tigers (4-1, 2-0 NLC) kept the ball away from their side of the field, especially in the second half.
“I like the way our team plays when they want to keep the ball and they’re patient,” Hoover said. “They did a very good job of moving the ball from side to side, getting the outside backs involved.
“It makes it very difficult for other teams to keep up with us, fatigue-wise.”
Lady Panthers coach Phil Ummel noted that his team was depleted by injuries, including senior midfielder Lexi Parisi. However, he said that ultimately didn’t factor into the loss.
“They outplayed us and they win tonight even if we’re healthy,” he said.
Warsaw’s JV team defeated NorthWood 3-1.
Warsaw will host Goshen on Tuesday at 7:15 p.m.
