A grant request to schedule Denise Brown, sister of Nicole Brown-Simpson, as speaker for the Domestic Violence Task Force was approved by Warsaw Board of Works members Friday.

Mayor Ernie Wiggins, Charlie Smith and Jerry Patterson approved the $9,000 Indiana Commission for Women grant request as a community awareness project. No place, date or time has been set for Brown's appearance. Becky Moreno, victim assistance coordinator for the Warsaw Police Department, filled out the application.

Several items regarding a proposed greenway for walkers and bicyclers were approved, including a $9,995 preliminary engineering services contract with GAI Consultants of Winona Lake. The company will prepare bid specifications, present a boardwalk design and hire a consultant for soil testing on the Pike Lake Campground-to-Kosciusko Community Hospital portion of the planned trail.

The board reviewed a logo for the Lake City Greenway designed by Steve Jones, and approved payment of the next phase of preliminary engineering in the amount of $15,500 to Herseg and Associates on the western arm of the trail.

In other business the board:

• Approved a change order for $1,445 subtracted from the contract with Bruner Construction for work on the Warsaw Police Department garage renovation.

• Approved sales of two "totaled" police vehicles in the amount of $400 to Gills Auto Salvage. Police chief Steve Foster said reusable equipment was removed from the cars and used to upgrade others.

• Approved a Parks Department contract of $300 with Best Fun Entertainment, Indianapolis, for a magician to appear June 15 during the Kids' Fest.

• Canceled an agreement with the Warsaw Housing Authority of $3,700. The city provided the services of former building inspector Pamela N. Kennedy as in-kind monies for the housing authority. Kennedy is no longer employed by the city. She now works for the WHA.

• Approved travel requests for Jeff Noffsinger to travel to Atlanta, Ga., as the mayor's representative during the All-America City Awards Conference; and the requests of Terry Polston and Joe Hawn to attend the Indiana DARE Conference.

• Tabled a new Sprint telephone system for the police department proposal until the next meeting.

Board of works members are Mayor Ernie Wiggins, Jerry Patterson and Charlie Smith. They meet at 10:30 a.m. the first and third Friday of each month in council chambers, city hall.
