Grace Roundup: Teel Named League Player Of The YearWINONA LAKE – Following an impressive senior volleyball season, Caylie Teel was recognized as the Crossroads League Player of the Year on Tuesday.
Teel, a former Tippecanoe Valley High School standout, was one of six Lady Lancers honored on the postseason All-Crossroads League Team.
Alexa Hill joined Teel on the First Team. Kelsee Zuidema and Marta Bleed earned a spot on the Second Team, Gina Novotny was honorable mention, and Makaela Lochmueller was named to the All-Freshman Team.
Teel’s honor came after a dominant season for Grace. She was an electric player, producing 465 kills and 490 digs. Her 3.5 kills per set led the league, and her 490 digs ranked ninth.
She racked up 23 double-doubles for the Lady Lancers.
Hill was the league leader in assists for the second year in a row, tallying 10.3 assists per set. She eclipsed the 2,000 and 3,000 career assists mark this season and also posted a career-best 355 digs.
Zuidema had 3.2 kills per set, ranking No. 5 in the league. She pounded out 430 kills on a .203 percentage.
Bleed was third on Grace’s team, producing 233 kills (2.6 per set). She hit at a .201 percentage.
Novotny has been Grace’s libero for every match. She tallied 627 digs, ranking fourth in the league. She notched double-digit digs in 32 matches.
Lochmueller led Grace with a .235 hitting percentage. She had 1.8 kills per set during league play, adding 0.8 blocks per set defensively to lead the Lady Lancers.
The Lady Lancers boast a 20-16 record, the second consecutive year winning 20 games under head coach Katie Van Hofwegen.
Grace is also returning to NCCAA Nationals for the second straight year, with the tournament starting Nov. 29 in Branson, Mo.
Men’s Basketball
CIRCLEVILLE, Ohio – Grace’s men’s basketball team continued its perfect start to the season with an 87-63 win at Ohio Christian on Tuesday.
The Lancers (6-0) enjoyed a career evening from Charlie Warner, who set a career high with 29 points while making 10 of 14 shots overall and 7 of 9 from the arc. Warner’s previous career bests were 21 points and five triples.
Grace never trailed in its road matchup on Tuesday. Logan Godfrey scored the first points of the game, and the Lancers’ lead only grew.
Warner sparked Grace early, pouring in nine points in just three minutes to give the Lancers separation. A three-pointer from Jaret Sons put Grace ahead 29-15 with 8:56 left in the opening half.
At halftime, Grace led 46-31. The Lancers shot 52 percent in the half, compared to 39 percent by the Trailblazers (2-6).
In the second half, OCU did its best to rally. The Trailblazers used a pair of treys to pull within 60-50 with 12:19 remaining.
Warner responded with two triples of his own in just 61 seconds, and OCU never recovered.
Grace’s lead ballooned to 26 in the waning minutes for the final 24-point margin of victory.
Godfrey tallied the lone double-double of the night with 15 points and 18 rebounds, shooting 7 of 10 from the floor.
Haden Deaton scored 10 points and grabbed five boards, and Sons and Eddie Gill IV each scored eight.
Joseph Smith had seven points and three boards, Braxton Linville handed out five assists, and Martin Schiele scored four points in the win.
As a team, Grace outrebounded Ohio Christian 36-19. The Lancers shot 56 percent from the floor and 52 percent from beyond the arc.
The Lancers return home this weekend for the annual Terry Polston Hoops for Hope. Grace will host Silver Lake on Friday at 8 p.m. and Emmaus on Saturday at 4 p.m. in the cancer care tournament.
