An Air Force veteran who served during the Cold War era is the Kosciusko County Veteran of the Month for June.
William A. Goshorn was presented with the recognition by Veteran Service Officer Darryl McDowell at the county commissioners meeting Tuesday morning.
Goshorn was born in July 1937 in South Bend to Marion and Mildred Goshorn, McDowell said in introducing Goshorn.
Shortly after graduating Leesburg High School, Goshorn joined the U.S. Air Force. In January 1960, he was sent to Lackland Air Force Base, Texas, for basic training, followed by basic electronics and missile systems training at Lowry Air Force Base, Denver, Colo.
After completion of all his initial training, he was assigned to the 587th Missile Maintenance located at Sembach Air Force Base, Germany, to perform preventative maintenance on systems in Europe.
Then, after completing 4-1/2 years in the Air Force, Goshorn was honorably discharged in 1964.
“After serving during the Cold War era, he returned to Kosciusko County. He worked as a supervisor at Zimmer, then as a quality assurance engineering manager at DePuy, until his retirement in 2000,” McDowell said.
In November 1962, Goshorn married Helge. They have two children, Kurt and Kimberly, one grandchild, one great-grandchild and one great-great-grandchild. Together, the two continue to live in Winona Lake.
After receiving his framed certificate, Goshorn said, “I would like to thank the county and everyone here for the recognition. Quite frankly, I would do it again if asked.”
