Golf Outing To Raise Funds For Baker Youth Clubs

Posted

Instead of golf shoes, participants in the Baker Youth Clubs Sixth Annual Night Golf Tourney may want to put on their platform shoes.

Besides the glow-in-the-dark golf balls, flagsticks lighted up with three-mile strobe lights and the Bowen Center-sponsored fireworks going off all night, this year the fund-raising event also will feature a disco hole complete with a disco ball.

"We always try to tweak it each year," said Scott Wiley, Baker Youth Clubs executive director. "My only hope is that the airplanes don't try to land on the golf course."

It's an event Wiley said people need to see to believe, and spectators are welcome. "It's really cool looking."

"New this year, we're going to have a disco hole. We're going to surround the green with tube landscaping lights. The disco ball will be on the green, we'll have disco music playing."

At the disco hole, Wiley said, at least one golfer will have to wear a '70s Afro-wig when they putt. He said they may even have a fog machine.

The Moonlight Golf outing is July 19 at 8 p.m. at Raccoon Run Golf Course. Cost per person is $40, or $160 per foursome. Cost to play in the nine-hole four-person scramble includes special golf balls, greens fees and refreshments. Riding carts is prohibited.

New this year is the earlier start time of 8 p.m. so the registration and raffle can be completed while it's still getting dark. Tip-off should be around 8:45 to 9 p.m.

"We're still looking for hole sponsors. We still need golfers," Wiley said.

For $150, a business can sponsor a hole or a tee box. Cost includes luminary bags with the business' name on them circling the green at the 100-yard markers and/or marking each tee area.

"I invite other corporate sponsorships to have fun with their hole," he said.

For both a hole sponsorship and a foursome, cost is $295, a savings of $15.

Wiley said they hope to have around 48 golfers - 12 foursomes - but can accommodate up to 72 golfers.

Last year's champions include the team of Brian Elliott, Matt Wolkins, Dave Wolkins and John Teevan, who have won the tourney two years in a row.

"People need to come and knock them off," Wiley said.

Mail check and registration form to Baker Youth Clubs, 800 N. Park Ave., Warsaw, IN 46580. Hole sponsors should include a copy of their logo for the luminary bags. For more information, call Wiley at 267-7169 or 268-9453 or pager at 268-3703. All profits go to help Baker Youth Clubs serve thousands of local youth annually. The organization has been serving youth since 1926 and had an attendance of 20,000 youth during the past year.

Of the annual golf outing, Wiley said, "You don't have to be a good golfer. It's just for people who want to have some fun."
