Need a shirt, hat or a house?
As part of a national campaign to improve awareness of recycling issues, the Kosciusko County Solid Waste District and several companies are teaming together for a special event Saturday in Warsaw.
Nearly 100 gifts made from recycled products will be given away from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday at Marsh grocery store, where WRSW will provide a live remote.
The event is part of the first national America Recycles Day, geared toward increasing public knowledge about all aspects of recycling, but especially of the importance of buying recycled items.
If recycling is to become sustainable, consumers need to buy more items made from recycled materials, said Marsha Eikenberry, the solid waste district director.
The event centers on pledge cards in which participants express a willingness to buy recycled products.
The pledge cards, available at Marsh and elsewhere, are then dropped off at the grocery store Saturday. They will eventually be sent to Washington, D.C., for part of a national raffle for a new home constructed of mostly recyclable items.
The first 25 people who drop off pledge cards Saturday will receive T-shirts. WRSW will give away two tickets to the Indianapolis Colts football game and 10 cases of Coke.
Drawings will also be made for some other unique giveaways including a park bench, a tote bag and purse, all made of recyclable products. The tote bag and purse were manufactured by a company known as Little Earth.
Recycling bins, hats and some literature will also be given away.
The "American Green Dream House," valued at $200,000, will be a three-bedroom, 2-1/2 bath home and will be constructed on a lot valued at a maximum of $50,000.
The home will be constructed in a location at the winner's choice.
Recycled products to be used in the home include asphalt, brick, cabinets, carpet, steel framing, ceiling tile, corrugated pipe, doors, piping and paint.
