Freshmen Student Council Sponsoring Food Drive For Combined Community Services

Each year, the freshman student council at Warsaw Community High School sponsors the canned food drive for Combined Community Services.

"Our goal is 15,000 cans," said Anshuri Gokhale, class president.

The drive kicks off tonight at the last home game for the boys basketball team and lasts for one week.

Freshman Morgan Jones said that at the game tonight, the "can-can" girls will help to promote the canned food drive. In addition, the crowd will be canvassed for monetary donations for the canned food drive.

The drive also is being promoted through school advertisements and announcements on WRSW.

If the school collects 15,000 cans, several teachers have pledged to color their hair, said freshman Jodi Leek.

She said the students are excited to be sponsoring the canned food drive, especially because of the children that it will help feed. "We're helping a lot of kids and families out" with the canned food drive, she said.

Boxes for donations from the community will be placed in various local businesses, such as WRSW and Owen's Supermarket.

The freshmen and seniors will deliver empty grocery bags to homes in each of their neighborhoods for donations. The bags will be picked up Feb. 28. Residents are encouraged to leave the bags full of canned food goods on their porches.

At WCHS, there is an ongoing competition for the week. Each of the top three first-period classes will receive a doughnut party.

Items that can be donated include nonperishable goods such as soup, noodles, most canned foods and macaroni.

"We are anxious to make this project go well," said Gokhale. "This is the first big project for the class of 2007 and we are very enthused about helping the needy in our community. Hopefully, we can reach our goal of 15,000 cans. Let's get involved."
