MISHAWAKA – Former Warsaw boys basketball head coach Al Rhodes won his 600th career game Thursday in Penn’s 71-56 win over South Bend Washington.
Rhodes’ record is 600-285.
He is fourth on the active Indiana boys basketball coaching wins list and 14th on the all-time list.
He needs eight more wins to pass up Jim Miller, for whom Rhodes was an assistant at Warsaw, on the all-time list.
Rhodes was the Tigers’ head coach from 1980-2002.
In that time, he amassed a 405-132 record and led the Tigers to a statte championship in 1984.
Rhodes is the owner of 15 sectional titles, seven regional crowns and four semi-state championships.
Warriors Whoop Pilgrims
SYRACUSE – The Wawasee boys and girls swim teams swept Plymouth Thursday in a Northern Lakes Conference home meet.
Wawasee’s boys won 127-51, while the girls won 113-72.
The boys team ran the pool, winning all 12 events.
Wawasee’s Karlson Hand, Alexander Troutman, Jacob Krugman and Bryce Knepp won the 200-yard medley relay in 1:52.06.
Hand took first in the 200 freestyle (1:58.76) and the 100 backstroke in 1:03.25, while Jared Krugman finished first in the 200 IM (2:04.52) and 100 butterfly 957.26) and Daegan Kingrey won the 50 freestyle in 23.60 and 100 freestyle (51.83).
Brady Claassen won the one-meter diving competition with a total score of 22.635, while Jacob Krugman won the 500 freestyle (5:28.32) and 100 breaststroke (1:05.46).
Wawasee’s Aaron Troutman, Hand, Kingrey and Jared Krugman combined to win the 400 freestyle relay (3:41.25), while Knepp, Jacob Krugman, Kingrey and Jared Krugman placed first in the 200 freestyle relay (1:38.94).
Wawasee’s girls won 8 out of 12 events.
Rileigh Atwood won the 200 freestyle (2:08.76) and 100 breaststroke (1:10.6) for the Lady Warriors, while Ella Park won the 200 IM (2:26.32) and Abigail Hackleman won the 100 butterfly (1:15.62).
Wawasee’s Jordan Gibbs took first in the 500 freestyle (6:07.37), while Lillian Tyler took first in the 100 backstroke in 1:06.85.
The Lady Warriors’ 200 freestyle relay team of Tyler, Atwood, Haberman and Park placed first (1:49.57), and teamed up again to win the 400 freestyle relay (4:04.79).
Warriors Mash Minutemen
SYRACUSE – The Wawasee wrestling team won 13 of 14 matches for a 64-6 Northern Lakes Conference home win over Concord Thursday.
Landon Dilley (106 pounds), Dylan Tom (113), Jace Alexander (120), Geremia Brooks (132), Elliott Tinsley (138), Braxton Alexander (145) and Isiah Farrote (152),Logan Baugh (160), Raymon Torres (170), Alex Castro (182), Chad Robison (195), Isaiah Tipping (220) and Hagaen Slusher (285) earned victories for the Wawasee.
The Warriors. (13-1, 4-0 NLC) will host the Wawasee December Duals Saturday.
Manchester Edged By Rochester
ROCHESTER – The Manchester wrestling team lost 37-30 Thursday at Rochester.
Manchester’s Elijah Burlingame (120 pounds), Ashton Moore (195) and Bryce Kamphues (285) picked up pins.
Ethan McWilliams (106) won by forfeit for the Squires, while Kevin Morales (145) won by an 11-7 decision and Trevor Dill (220) won by a 9-2 decision.
Dawson Leads Tigers To Victory
Kyle Dawson scored 14 points to lead the Warsaw freshmen boys basketball team to a 46-22 home win Thursday over Wawasee.
Judah Simfukwe added 12 points for the Tigers (7-1, 2-0 Northern Lakes Conference), while Sami Smith had eight points.
Warsaw led 19-11 after the first half, and stretched the lead to double figures with a 16-5 third quarter.
The Tigers were able to ride the lead to victory in the fourth.
Keaton Dukes led Wawasee with six points.
Warsaw will host the Tiger Tournament Saturday.
