The Stars and Stripes, Old Glory, the Star-Spangled Banner.

However it is referred to, the American flag is proudly flown by many county residents. And those displaying their patriotism know all too well that our national symbol begins to show its age due to the wear and tear of the elements.

The county American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars posts are sponsoring a ceremony for the disposal of unserviceable flags at 2 p.m. June 13 at North Webster's American Legion Post 253.

Tom Corbat, county commander for the American Legion County Council, said the public is encouraged to come and view the ceremony, and those having flags that are tattered or frayed should bring them to the nearest American Legion or VFW post.

"Anyone who has a tattered or worn flag should take them to the nearest American Legion VFW post so it can be properly and respectfully retired," he said.

The ceremony will follow the protocol established by the Flag Code in 1942. The code details that unserviceable flags should be retired in a dignified manner.

All unserviceable flags are inspected, then laid upon a ceremonial fire. The post chaplain then recites the following prayer:

Almighty God, Captain of all hosts and Commander over all, bless and consecrate this present hour.

We thank Thee for our country and its flag, and for the liberty for which it stands.

To clean and purging flame we commit the flags, worn-out in worthy service. As they yield their substance to the fire, may Thy Holy Light spread over us and bring our hearts renewed devotion to God and Country.
