LEESBURG - A rural Leesburg family was twice victimized this weekend - first by a fire, then by burglars.
Leesburg Fire Department was called to the Brad and Sherri Johnson residence at 3707 E. CR 400N, Warsaw, at 3:22 p.m. Saturday.
A fire started in the recycling bin in the attached garage of the residence and the flames also spread into the house, where smoke also permeated the structure. Although the origin of the fire was pinpointed, officials did not determine a cause. Damage is estimated at $50,000 to $60,000.
The family left the residence for the night Saturday, leaving a window partially opened to allow for air circulation to help clear out the smoke smell.
When they returned to their home about 8 a.m. Sunday, nearly $2,000 worth of electronics equipment was missing.
Sherri Johnson told a deputy with the Kosciusko County Sheriff's Department that two 27-inch televisions, a stereo system, two floor speakers and a VCR were missing from the home.
The LFD was assisted in extinguishing the blaze at the Johnson home by crews from North Webster Fire Department. Warsaw Fire Department also provided a water tanker at the scene.
