Fifth Annual Road Criterium Races Saturday In Downtown Warsaw

Posted
Those who have not had the opportunity to watch competitive cycling races or are already a cycling fan can watch the “Downtown Classic” Criterium in Warsaw Saturday.

This is the fifth year for the event.

The criterium is a multi-category event, and cyclists from throughout the Midwest will compete for a total purse of $3,850 as well as other prizes.

The local KCV Cycling Club is the driving force behind the downtown event as well as the Fat & Skinny Tire Fest in Winona Lake.

KCV Cycling is a supporting sponsor of a cycling team that consists of 18 members (nine male and nine female).

The team competes in road, criterium, mountain and cyclocross races, and has won more than 50 races in the past six years.

Formerly known as the Alderfer Bergen Cycling Team, this year’s team has changed its name to Team Racing for Riley.

With the name change, the team has made a commitment to raise funds and awareness for the Riley Hospital for Children organization.

Staging for the races will be at 2:30 p.m. on the courthouse lawn, with races starting at 3 p.m.

Adam Strieby, X-Games veteran and professional BMX dirt jumping and street professional, will kick off the afternoon cycling events with a BMX stunt show at 2 p.m. Saturday downtown. The show promises entertainment for both children and adults.

KCV Cycling Club will host free kid's races at 3 p.m. This is an opportunity for kids in age groups 4-6, 7-9 and 10-12 to take a lap around the race course, and get a feel for competitive cycling.

Children must bring bicycles (no training wheels) and helmets, and prizes will be awarded.

Multi-category races begin at 3:30 p.m. and will wind up between 8:30 and 9 p.m.

The 2011 course is spread out over six city blocks in downtown Warsaw, and individual events are 30 to 60 minutes in length.

Bleachers will be available at the corner of Center and Buffalo and Market and Buffalo to facilitate viewing the races.

The schedule for all cycling events is available at www.warsawcdc.org

The website also features a glossary of common cycling terms.
