Fair 'Officially' Opens Tonight With Ceremony, Free Concert

While 4-H activities began over the weekend, the 4-H & Community Fair officially opens this evening at 6 p.m.

Deb Burch and Travis Hickman were crowned 4-H queen and king Saturday night at the official awards program, and Heather Lamb and Jeff Wise were named 4-H princess and prince.

Also on Saturday, awards were given for the consumer clothing and fashion revue (see photos on page 7A) at Lakeview Middle School.

At the Fairgrounds, dog, cat and goat contests were held over the weekend at the 4-H end of the grounds, while food booths, concessions and rides were being set up.

Officially, the fair will open at 6 p.m. today at the fair office, with the ribbon-cutting ceremony. "Holy Fire," a Christian rock group, will entertain for free in the Activity Tent at 7 p.m.

Rides open at 4 p.m. today, and tomorrow is wristband day, where $12 will pay for a wristband that allows entrance to all rides.

Also on Tuesday, the Powder Puff and Compact Car Demolition Derby is scheduled for the grandstand, and the Cutie King & Queen Contest and Little Miss & Mister Contest will take place in the Activity Tent.

Wednesday is Kiddies' Day, with games and entertainment from 9 a.m. to noon in the Activity Tent, rides for $1 each from 1 to 11 p.m., and the Junior and Senior Youth Talent Show at 6 p.m. in the Activity Tent. At 7 and 9 p.m. Leroy VanDyke will entertain free in the grandstand.

Thursday is Senior Citizens' and Farmers' Day, with bingo, euchre and free entertainment scheduled. Thursday also is wristband day for $12. Grandstand entertainment will be the Demolition Derby at 6:30 p.m. "State of the Heart" will entertain at 7 p.m. in the Activity Tent.

On Friday, rides will cost $1 each between 1 and 6 p.m., with the toy give-away at 5 p.m. in the Activity Tent. Mud truck action will take place at 6 p.m. in the grandstand, along with the "Jet Truck," and "Spike and the Bulldogs" will give shows in the Activity Tent at 8 and 9:30 p.m.

Saturday, the last day of the fair, is another wristband day on the midway, and is the day of the Semi Truck Show and Semi Truck Pull, at 7:30 p.m. in the grandstand. Also at 7:30 p.m. in the Home and Family Arts Building the annual line dance party is scheduled. At 10 p.m. at the fair office the drawings for fair give-aways will be held.

4-H activities today include the rabbit, beef and goat shows; first year member fun night; and rabbit royalty and livestock judging contests.

Tuesday is 4-H Leaders Appreciation Day. Open shows will highlight poultry, pigeons and waterfowl; swine; llamas; and horse and pony versatility. Dairy judging and dairy showmanship will take place at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in the show arena.

Activities begin to wind down for 4-H'ers Wednesday, with the horse and pony show and the sheep show.

Thursday will be the horse and pony show, the dairy show and the supreme showmanship contest.

On Friday, the 4-H livestock auction, an all-day event, will take place in the show arena, starting at 10 a.m.
