SYRACUSE – Wawasee High School remained on lockdown Friday afternoon after a threat was called into the school Friday morning.
Superintendent Dr. Tom Edington said Friday afternoon the school would remain under that status for the rest of the school day.
“Our doors are always locked,” Edington said. “In a situation like this, we walk the halls and check the doors more frequently.”
An unidentified person called the school at 8:51 a.m. Friday. The exact nature of the threat is not being disclosed.
“While the caller didn’t identify anyone by name, it was a specific enough threat that we believed we had to act,” Edington said.
School officials consulted with state, county and local police and decided to initiate lockdown procedures.
Edington said a handful of students were released to their parents at their parents’ request. He added that school staff continued to monitor hallways and doors Friday afternoon.
A bank robbery occurred in North Webster Friday morning approximately one half hour after the threat to Wawasee High School.
Edington said the possibility that the two incidents may have been related is being investigated by police.
As a precaution, lockdown procedures also were initiated at North Webster Elementary School following the bank robbery. That school was not the target of any threats.
