Etna Green Begins Meeting With A Moment Of Silence

Posted

ETNA GREEN - A moment of silence and prayer was held at the start of the Etna Green Town Council meeting Tuesday as council president Eileen Hall asked those present to stand "to remember the events of Sept. 11, 2001."

When the regular portion of the meeting got under way, the council passed ordinances restricting overnight parking along Ind. 19 and setting sewer rates for municipal buildings and approved bids for new sidewalks and curbing and removal of trees.

The parking ordinance is necessary, in part, to make snow removal easier, council members said. No parking will be allowed in the business district of Ind. 19 from midnight to 6 a.m. This affects the east side of the highway from the railroad tracks to the alley behind Poulson's and the west side from the former Mom's Cafe to the bank.

The sewer rate ordinance is required by the State Board of Accounts. The rate for municipal buildings was set at $17.70 per month.

Garcia Construction of Fort Wayne was awarded the contract for sidewalks and curbs at a cost not to exceed $21,000. The work will be paid for with Economic Development Income Tax funds.

H&H Tree Service of Warsaw will remove designated trees along Ind. 19 that are a hazard to the town's electric lines. The job will be done for $2,100.

In other business, the council:

• Approved the 2003 budget as advertised. There were no remonstrators.

• Asked for the town attorney to work on a salary ordinance to be considered at the next council meeting.

• Approved the purchase of two lights to be mounted atop poles at Heritage Park. A total of eight lights is needed, but at a cost of $376 each, the council opted to start with two to make sure the lights will serve the intended purpose.

• Set large-item trash pickup for Oct. 10 and 17.

• Reminded residents that Old Fashioned Daze, the fall celebration that replaces Customer Appreciation Days, will take place Sept. 21 at Remembrance Park. Food, various activities and a live band are planned.

• Approved the purchase of up to four "Men at Work" signs at a cost not to exceed $1,000.

The Etna Green Town Council meets at 7 p.m. the second Tuesday of each month in the fire station meeting room. Council members are Eileen Hall, Jeff Klinefelter and Andy Cook.
