An amnesty of sorts is planned at the KC Depot beginning Saturday through April 28.
Electronics and televisions will be accepted at half price - 7 cents per pound. The week is packed with rewards for recyclers.
The KC Depot will be open every day, including Sunday, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Depot is at 220 S. Union St., Warsaw. The building is one block west of the Warsaw post office between Market Street and Winona Avenue, next to the railroad tracks.
County residents are invited to stop by and learn about the Kosciusko County Solid Waste Management District's services. The Eco Store, with a variety of items made of recycled materials, will be open along with the reuse room where leftover - and still good - paints are available for free.
Elementary school students are invited to enter a poster contest.
Lakeland Christian Academy middle school students will have a "Trash into Art" show.
Saturday, Willie 103.5 will broadcast from the KC Depot.
Oldies 98.3 will be on site April 28.
Free orange trash bags and safety vests are available for roadside and alleyway trash pickup. The trash will be disposed of for free. The first 300 people who bring in a trash bag will receive a free tree. Other trees, provided by the Soil and Water Conservation District, will be awarded as prizes.
T-shirts will be given to the first 300 people who visit the Depot Saturday.
Burnt-out incandescent bulbs can be exchanged for compact florescent bulbs. The first 300 are free with reduced prices on other exchanges.
Incandescent 60- to 70-watt bulbs used a lot of energy and generate heat. The coiled and now solid fluorescent bulbs use a lot less electricity and stay cool, according to Sue Studebaker, district executive director.
Drawings will be held for a recycled "horse" tire swing; a composter and gift certificates.
Environmental Week will be a great time to bring in medical "sharps," batteries, household chemicals and the usual recyclable materials such as newspaper, cardboard, paper, No. 1 and No. 2 plastics, aluminum, tin and steel cans and glass generated by a household.
Waste tires cost $1.25 for car tires; $5 for truck tires and $15 tractor tires. An additional $5 will be charged if rims need to be removed.
Kosciusko County REMC is a major sponsor of the event. Other sponsors include the Kosciusko County Solid Waste Management District and Ameri-Waste.
