The fifth annual fundraiser for Kosciusko Literacy Services will be Oct. 19 at Tippecanoe Lake Country Club, and again will feature Dr. Elliot Engel.
The presentation will be "Our Slippery Mother Tongue: A Light History of English," and the event will be sponsored by Mr. and Mrs. Howard Levin and R.R. Donnelley & Sons Co.
Originally from Indianapolis, Engel received his bachelor's degree from Indiana University and his master's and doctorate as a Woodrow Wilson Fellow at UCLA. He has taught courses at North Carolina State University, the University of North Carolina and Duke University. His books have been published by British and American presses, and his articles have appeared in several magazines. In addition to lecturing throughout the United States, in Europe and Japan, his mini-lecture series on Dickens appeared on PBS television.
In past fundraisers for KLS, Engel presented insights into Charles Dickens, Winston Churchill, Mark Twain and Edgar Allan Poe. This year, Engel will put a new twist on his presentation by providing a glimpse into the origins and development of our native language. Rather than a dull, dry English lesson, Engel will throw in enough trivia to satisfy even the most avid experts. Learn why the language developed from the Celts to the Anglo-Saxons to the invading French, and the origins of some common words and phrases.
Proceeds from the event support Kosciusko Literacy Services. The evening will start at 6 p.m. The cost is $85 per person. Reading sponsorships, which provide tickets to literature teachers and students, also are available. For more information, contact Kosciusko Literacy Services, 574-267-5380.
