Education Committee Receives Grants For Dropout Prevention Efforts

Posted
Kosciusko County Educational Development committee recently received grants from the Warsaw Breakfast Optimist Club, the Dr. Dane & Mary Louise Miller Foundation, MutualBank Foundation, Rotary Club and Wildman Business Group.

KCED was formed in summer 2009 to address the high school dropout rate in the county's three high schools.

Over the past year, a committee comprised of superintendents, educators and representatives of service groups, business and law enforcement have created a community-based project to help reduce the number of students leaving school before graduation. The plan is two tiered.

First, a total of seven graduation coaches have been appointed at the county's three high schools. These coaches will work one on one with at-risk high school students to help them meet the graduation requirements to receive their graduation diploma.

The second is a program to provide mentors to 160 to 180 students identified as at-risk in grades kindergarten to eighth grade. This program is a joint effort between KCED, Kids Hope USA, Baker Youth Club and Big Brothers and Big Sisters. For more information about KCED or to volunteer for the mentoring program, e-mail KCED@rocketmail.com or call 574-267-8771 or 574-269-2020.
