Preliminary 2012 ISTEP scores show improvement for Warsaw Community Schools.
Chief Accountability Officer Tom Kline reported on the state assessment at the school board meeting Monday night, and said the results are not final. The Indiana Department of Education has not officially released ISTEP results as of this morning.
There are some new ISTEP rules including a student’s test scores not counting toward a school if the student has attended that school for less than 162 days. The results Kline presented to the board include those students who were with Warsaw less than 162 days. Final data may be better than what he presented, he said.
In language arts, Kline said, WCS scored a 81.7 average in 2012, compared to 79.1 in 2011 and 77.5 in 2010. In math, WCS scored an average of 81.1 in 2012, 76.2 in 2011 and 78.6 in 2010.
Though Kline only highlighted some individual schools’ scores, all the averages for every WCS building was provided.
In 2012 in language arts, Claypool Elementary averaged 84.7, compared to 79.8 in 2011. Mathematics in 2012 was 85.3, compared to 67.9 in 2011. Claypool has only been reopened for the past two years.
Eisenhower Elementary averaged 89.16 in 2012 for language arts, compared to 90.2 in 2011 and 85.8 in 2010. In math, Eisenhower’s scores continued to drop, averaging 82.3 in 2012, 83.3 in 2011 and 87.9 in 2010.
Harrison Elementary got a new principal for the 2010-11 school year. Its scores increased. In 2012 in language arts, Harrison averaged 82.5, compared to 74.5 in 2011 and 75.6 in 2010. Math scores were 75.5 in 2012, 71.3 in 2011 and 69.5 in 2010.
Jefferson Elementary’s scores also increased. Language arts in 2012 was 80.6, compared to 72 in 2011 and 75.9 in 2010. In math, averages were 81.3 in 2012, 68.9 in 2011 and 79.4 in 2010.
In 2012 at Leesburg Elementary, language arts averaged 81.2 on ISTEP, compared to 77.5 in 2011 and 78.7 in 2010. In math, scores averaged 79.5 in 2012, 79 in 2011 and 82.4 in 2010.
While Lincoln Elementary’s language arts didn’t drop too much from 2011 to 2012, its math scores dropped almost by a 10-point average.
Language arts at Lincoln averaged 86.3 in 2012, compared to 88 in 2011 and 86 in 2010, according to the numbers presented.
Math was 88.8 in 2010 at Lincoln, rose to 90.5 in 2011 but dropped to 80.9 in 2012.
Madison Elementary made significant gains in math over the past year. In 2010, the average was 74.7, increased to 76.1 in 2011 and jumped to 87.45 in 2012.
In language arts, Madison’s averages were 86.6 in 2012, 84.8 in 2011 and 72.6 in 2010.
Washington Elementary’s averages both dropped from 2011 to 2012.
In language arts at Washington, the average was 79 in 2010, 85.3 in 2011 and fell to 80.1 in 2012. In math, the average was 75.2 in 2010, 79.1 in 2011 and dropped slightly to 78 in 2012.
Both of the middle schools made improvements in ISTEP score averages.
In language arts, Edgewood Middle School went from 80 in 2010 to 77.5 in 2011 and to 82.2 in 2012. Meanwhile, in math, scores went from 79.1 in 2010, to 75.8 in 2011 and up to 82.7 in 2012.
Lakeview Middle School’s language art scores, Kline reported, were 68.7 in 2010 and stayed at 71.8 in 2011 and 2012. For math, the average went from 76 in 2010 to 73.5 in 2011 and 79.8 in 2012.
“I believe each of these scores we see will go up, maybe slightly, maybe a lot, because of the 162 days rule,” Kline said.
In summary, he said, WCS experienced a 2.5 percent increase in the number of students who passed the English language arts portion of the ISTEP+ exam. Approximately 78 more WCS students passed the English language arts ISTEP+ assessment in 2012 than in 2011, he said.
The school district experienced a 4.9 percent increase in the number of students who passed the math portion of ISTEP. Kline said approximately 156 more students passed the math portion of the assessment in 2012 than in 2011.
