David Forker Evans, one of the three former Duke lacrosse teammates cleared of all criminal charges Wednesday (see page 8B) and proclaimed innocent by the North Carolina attorney general, has a local tie to Warsaw.

For more than a year, the Evans family and the families of Reade Seligmann and Collin Finnerty fought charges, including rape charges, brought by a hired female dancer. The college students proclaimed their innocence with David C. Evans calling the case nothing but "fantastic lies."

David's father is David Charles Evans, a 1964 Warsaw Community High School graduate. He grew up on North Union Street, the son of the Herbert C. and the Betty Ruth Evans. Herbert was a division manager of LM Berry Co. His brother, Thomas Herbert, was one year older, according to the Warsaw City Directory of 1961.

In high school, David C. was president of the Kosciusko County Teenage Republicans, lieutenant governor of Hoosier Boys State in 1962, president of the Warsaw chapter of the National Forensic League, 1963 most valuable player for football in the Central Indiana Athletic Conference, and received 14 varsity athletic letters.

As an undergraduate at Indiana University, he was president of the senior class and senior class council of 1968, president of the Indiana University Young Republican Club and recipient of the 1968 Elvis J. Stahr Distinguished Senior Award.

The Warsaw native participated on the Indiana University football team four years on a scholarship and was a member of the IU Rose Bowl football team in 1967. A two-year letterman and a member of the I Man's Club, he was given recognition his junior and senior years on the All-Academic football team.

The senior Evans is a lawyer in Washington, D.C., a partner in the Reed Smith law firm, where he heads the firm's real estate group. He joined the firm in 1971, the same year he graduated from the IU Law School and passed the Indiana bar.

David's mother, Rae Forker Evans, is a lobbyist and chairwoman of the Ladies Professional Golf Association board. She also is founder and president of Evans Capitol Group, a lobbying firm with a client list that has included the Girl Scouts, the Newspaper Association of America and the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.

Their son, David F., graduated from Duke University in May 2006. He is a 2002 graduate of Landon School, a traditional source of collegiate lacrosse talent.
