Drug, Alcohol Quiz Bowl Set Saturday At Library

Posted

Sixteen fifth- and sixth-graders from Kosciusko County will converge on the Warsaw Community Public Library Saturday morning for a unique competition.

The 2005 Kosciusko County Drug and Alcohol Quiz Bowl will begin at 10:30 a.m. and finish when the competition is narrowed down to one student from each grade. Those students will represent Kosciusko County in the Regional Drug and Alcohol Quiz Bowl May 20 at Jefferson Pointe Mall, Fort Wayne.

The local competition is sponsored by the Kosciusko Council on Drug Education and Drug Abuse Resistance Education officers.

Participants, who advanced by winning a competition at their individual schools, will be asked questions on information from a booklet the students have studied for the past few weeks.

Once the competition begins, students will be kept in a room and called to answer one question at a time individually. When the student enters the competition room, the student will pull a numbered ball from a bowl and answer the corresponding question.

Once a student gives an incorrect answer, the student is eliminated. The competition will continue until one fifth-grader and one sixth-grader remain.

In the first two rounds, students will be asked to answer true or false questions. The second two rounds consist of multiple choice questions. In rounds five and six, the students will be asked to answer open-ended questions. The final rounds, if needed, require students to spell vocabulary words from the text.

The contest will be judged by three county DARE officers: Terry Polston and Joe Hahn from Warsaw, and Tim Sammons from Pierceton.

Fifth-grade students participating in the event are: Daniel Miller, Akron Elementary; Kaitlin Wiley, Harrison Elementary; Samantha Jensen, Jefferson Elementary; Ashton Warren, Madison Elementary; Chelsee Christoffel, Pierceton Elementary; Anthony Burkholder, Sacred Heart Elementary; and Nichole Brackett, Washington Elementary.

Sixth-graders competing are: Kristen VanOsdol, Eisenhower Elementary; Cara Eastis, Harrison Elementary; Stephanie Shuter, Jefferson Elementary; Jordan Swartzentruber, Leesburg Elementary; Chris Yingling, Lincoln Elementary; Britta Jackson, Madison Elementary; J.C. Aguilar, Sacred Heart Elementary; and Sarah Johnson, Washington Elementary.

All participants will receive a t-shirt, and the top student in each class will receive a $50 savings bond.
