Staff Report-
This spring Dixie Sternwheeler Inc. received a donation from an area resident who wanted to share the experience of riding the Dixie Boat with local children who might otherwise not be able to ride. William “Billy” Clutter passed away in 2007, but as a result, he provided this opportunity. To make this possible Dixie Sternwheeler Inc. has contacted many children’s organizations, and Big Brothers Big Sisters is one of the first groups who will be participating in helping make Clutter’s dream come true. Big Brothers Big Sisters is a 501(c)3 not-for-profit organization which operates under the belief that every child has the ability to succeed and thrive in life. As the nation’s largest volunteer supported mentoring network, Big Brothers Big Sisters makes meaningful, monitored matches between adult volunteers (“Bigs”) and children (“Littles”), ages 6 through 18, in communities across the country. The mission is to provide children facing adversity with strong and enduring, professionally supported one-to-one relationships that change their lives for the better based on Christian values. Big Brothers Big Sisters has been supporting children in Kosciusko county for more than 30 years with mentors and opportunities. Big Brothers Big Sisters will distribute a free Dixie ticket to each “Big” in Kosciusko County for use on an outing with their “Little.” “We are grateful to partner with the Dixie Sternwheeler so these kids can enjoy the entertaining experience and historic value of a Dixie ride around beautiful Lake Webster,” said Trina Hoy, BBBS community development director, in a release provided. “It’s amazing to me the number of kids that live in a county with so many lakes that have never even been on a boat. This is a great opportunity for them.” Kosciusko BBBS is pursuing volunteer positive role models to serve as “Bigs” in all parts the county, in both school-based and community-based programs. Being a “Big” only takes three to four hours a month. For more information, contact Hoy at 574-551-6386, email Trina.Hoy@bbbsnei.org or visit www.BBBSNEI.org
