Dig's Diner closed its doors for good Dec. 29 after serving food to the community for 17 years.
Bill "Dig" DeGaetano, owner of Dig's Diner, North Buffalo Street, Warsaw, said he made the decision in November to close the diner.
"The diner was becoming too much work to run with my job as a utility worker at Zimmer," DeGaetano said. The diner closed Dec. 29 and a "closed" sign was taped to the diner's front window that still remains.
Open houses were held in July for people interested in purchasing the building.
DeGaetano said there were some responses, but offers to purchase the building were not high enough.
The diner opened in downtown Warsaw March 12, 1990.
DeGaetano owned the diner with his wife, Nanette, and said it was not an easy decision to make to close the diner.
"It was a fun run and I will miss my customers," DeGaetano said.
Jason Bays, who has been a dishwasher and janitor at the diner for five years, said he will miss the diner.
"I will miss working with Dig because I respected him as a boss," Bays said.
John Perkins Jr., who has been an employee for four years, said he will miss the customer interaction most.
"I became close with the customers and employees over the years and I will miss both," Perkins said.
DeGaetano and his employees loaded items such as a walk-in freezer, plates, bowls, glasses and cups into a trailer Thursday afternoon that have been purchased by businesses.
"No one is going to be able to use all of the silverware I have," joked DeGaetano.
Canned and fresh food was donated to Serenity House and Our Father's House.
The building is for sale and people interested in the building can call Juanita Wagner at Coldwell Banker at 574-265-4910.
