Detroit Street Crash Hurts Warsaw Driver

Posted
One person was injured and Ind. 15 was closed for several hours after a truck crashed into a utility pole Thursday evening.

The Warsaw Police Department responded to a call about an accident on Ind. 15 (Detroit Street) near O'Reilly's Auto Parts around 9:30 p.m. Thursday. When officers arrived, they discovered a 1997 Dodge Ram pickup driven by Jose Ruben Espino, 42, of Warsaw, had crashed into a NIPSCO pole.

Medics initially called a medical helicopter to airlift Espino from the scene, but they later determined that he was not in critical condition and called off the airlift request. Espino suffered minor cuts to his head and was taken to Kosciusko Community Hospital in serious but stable condition.

The Kosciusko County accident reconstruction team determined Espino was northbound in the southbound lane of Detroit Street. Espino then swerved back to the east side of the road, hit a curb on the east side of Detroit Street and slid back across the center line before crashing into the pole.

Accident investigation team members said that alcohol could be a factor in the crash, and blood tests are pending.

The Kosciusko County accident investigation team was assisted at the scene by the Warsaw Police Department, Warsaw Fire Department, Multi-Township EMS and the Kosciusko County Sheriff's Department.
