Grants totaling $161,000 from state departments will help DePuy Orthopaedics Inc., Warsaw, train employees, Indiana lieutenant governor announced Thursday.

Lt. Gov. Kathy Davis presented DePuy President Kevin Sidow with a check for $161,000 Thursday afternoon. The assistance includes $133,000 from the Indiana Department of Commerce Skills Enhancement Fund and $28,000 from the Department of Workforce Development Incumbent Worker Training Fund.

Davis said the state is proud of DePuy's success and emphasized that DePuy was the original orthopedics company.

"DePuy has continued to invest significantly in Kosciusko County," she said.

"It's a great time to be a resident of Warsaw, Indiana," said Mayor Ernie Wiggins.

He said the orthopedic industry attracts attention to Warsaw from all over the world.

"Others look to us as an example of what's right with our economy," Wiggins said.

In accepting the check from Davis, Sidow said DePuy is expanding the borders of arthritis care and noted that in Indiana, attention is given to fostering home-grown growth.

He said the grants will be used for specialized education and training but did not specify if new jobs would be added.

DePuy also recently announced it would be expanding its operations by $81 million, but that no new jobs or buildings would be tied to the expansion.

Sidow said at the time that the investment would be tied to development of new products, including a system for computer-aided surgery.
