DePuy Announces Addition Of Research Center

Posted

DePuy Orthopaedics, a Johnson & Johnson company, will dedicate its 49,000-square-foot Research and Innovation Center at its Warsaw headquarters Sept. 9.

The center supports research in life sciences and advanced materials. Kevin Sidow, worldwide president, DePuy, said, "There are few facilities like it anywhere in the world. This is good news both economically and medically."

DePuy, which produces surgical implants and other products to treat people with severe arthritis, views the Research and Innovation Center as the latest growth in what has become one of the leading industries in Indiana. Warsaw is seen by many as the world headquarters for this fast-growing industry.

Researchers will expand the frontiers of arthritis care just as the population of older Americans is growing. This growth creates more demand than ever for devices to help people live fuller, more independent lives.

Richard Tarr, DePuy's vice president, worldwide research and emerging technologies, said, "The research team is exploring new classes of implants and materials to treat people with severe arthritis and other bone and joint problems."

The center gives the company more space for the equipment required for advanced research activities. Researchers at DePuy collaborate with medical centers, universities and high-tech companies worldwide.

The multimillion dollar center employs scientists, biologists and biomedical engineers. Sidow said, "These are the high-tech jobs the state of Indiana is trying to attract and retain." The expanded facility could lead to a significant number of new jobs in the next five years, DePuy said.
