Staff Report-
A Kosciusko County Sheriff’s deputy is credited with locating a missing cancer patient from Indianapolis along U.S. 30 Monday.
Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Department Deputy Chris Francis responded to an 11:38 a.m. call of a male subject that was parked on the side of U.S. 30 near CR 350 West Monday that appeared to be disorientated.
Francis arrived and was immediately waved down by the subject later identified as Ralph A. Hayes, 61, Indianapolis. As Francis spoke with Hayes, it became evident that the subject did not know where he was, believing that he was still potentially in Marion County.
Francis immediately requested an ambulance as the Kosciusko County Central Dispatch Center made contact with Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department. It was soon learned that Hayes had been reported missing by his wife in Indianapolis.
As Hayes was being transported to Kosciusko Community Hospital for a medical evaluation, Francis was advised that Hayes suffered from lung cancer and was prescribed several different medications that have varying effects.
Hayes was originally en route to a 7:30 a.m. cancer treatment appointment and was completely unaware that he had travelled north of Indianapolis almost 110 miles.
Hayes’ wife and family members were notified of his location at K.C.H.
