Data Center Backlash

Posted

Editor, Times-Union:
Most of us are probably happy to see campaign ads coming to an end. However, a common talking point this election cycle was backlash to data centers. It seemed associated with them was a candidate’s opportunity to give their opponents the scarlet letter. It got particularly ludicrous though when candidates who couldn’t really address AI policy, like Democrat Secretary of State nominee Beau Bayh, started trying to use it as a talking point.
I have written in the past about the impact data centers could have on the local economy so hesitation and concern about them is extremely appropriate. However, blanket opposition to them is unlikely to be sustainable or feasible. AI technology is redefining our economy internationally and domestically so unfocused complaining about it is inevitably going to be remembered like candlemakers opposing the lightbulb.
For the politicians who have campaigned against data centers, we need to hold them accountable. Plenty of politicians make vague promises, but when reality sets in they often support what they campaigned against. It’s important we follow our elected officials to see if they go from “I will protect you from data centers” to “we need to defend our interests against China.”
