Creighton Brothers LLC helped in the fight against hunger by donating more than 7,000 eggs to the Food Bank of Northern Indiana. Food banks experience a surge in need for high-protein foods, such as eggs, during the holiday season as families struggle to make ends meet. Members of the United Egg Producers are contributing to food banks all across America to ease the struggle of putting food on the table during the holidays. UEP is encouraging other companies and individuals to join the fight against hunger and support the 48 million Americans who live in food insecure homes. “We appreciate our long-standing relationship with the Northern Indiana Food Bank. The Food Bank serves numerous communities who face the issue of food shortage and hunger. With the added financial strain in the holiday season, this need grows exponentially,” said Mindy Truex, vice president, Creighton Brothers LLC. “That’s why we are making this donation today, to provide sought-after high protein eggs, but also to raise visibility of the issue so individuals and companies will join in with donations during this time of elevated need.” In total, Creighton Brothers will donate 90,720 eggs to the Food Bank of Northern Indiana this year, including the 7,560 donated this week. To put it in perspective, 90,720 eggs stacked on top of each other would stand taller than 2,700 7-foot Christmas trees placed on top of each other. “Creighton Brothers continues to be an incredible Food Bank of Northern Indiana partner who clearly understands what it takes to positively affect the health of a community,” said Milt Lee, executive director. “And, this generous donation of eggs is an example of that commitment and knowledge.” Sources of high-quality protein like fresh eggs are among the most needed items at food assistance organizations. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, one large egg delivers 6 grams of protein and 13 essential nutrients such as choline, folate, iron and zinc. Additionally, the USDA concluded in 2011 that the average amount of cholesterol was 14 percent lower and vitamin D content was 64 percent higher than previously thought. This holiday season, 42.4 million Americans – 13.7 percent of the population – are receiving food stamp benefits and 49 million Americans live in food insecure households. Locally, nearly 16 percent of northern Indiana residents live in food insecure households and 44 percent of children here come from food insecure households. “Our generous farmers donate fresh eggs to their local food assistance organizations year-round,” said Chad Gregory, president and CEO of United Egg Producers. “It’s fantastic to see Creighton Brothers’ continued support of their local community during the holiday season.”
