CR 350W Residents Petition Against Road-Widening Plan

Chris Garza presented a petition against altering CR 350W to the county commissioners on Tuesday.

The 99-signature petition, signed by property owners along the county road, indicated the residents believe a wider thoroughfare is necessary from U.S. 30 to old Ind. 30. However, they prefer it not be 350W.

"Our homes would be too close to the road," Garza said, reading from the petition, "if the project was carried out. Cars travel too fast on the road already."

The commissioners accepted the petition without comment.

Bob Mohmeyer, county systems manager, believes lightning rods will offer a little more protection against power surges.

Commissioner Ron Truex begged to differ Tuesday when Mohmeyer appeared before the board.

"Why hasn't what we've done so far been enough?" he asked.

Mohmeyer said they'd offer additional protection, which Truex doubted.

"They work if the lightning hits the rods, if it doesn't ... ," Truex said.

No action was taken regarding the two lightning rod quotes by Schenkel Lightning Rods and Tri-State Lightning Protection.

Rick's Electronics was selected as the lowest, most responsible bidder for a telephone wiring project in the Justice Building addition.

Rick's bid was $49,964.45; Sprint sent a bid in at $50,090; and Gary Electric's bid was $57,000.

Kurt Carlson of the Bowen Center approached the board with good news and bad news.

The Bowen Center is managing the day-to-day operation of the Kosciusko Youth Center.

Carlson said there is a decline in population while costs have remained constant.

"There is not a need, regionally, for this type of facility," he said. "The census is down all over the state."

He said the Bowen Center's fiscal year ended in June and he would make a formal presentation regarding the future of the youth center at a later date.

Linda Dilling, director of the Lakeland Art Center, asked for a $1,200 appropriation for an administrative salary of $100 per month.

She advised the commissioners the Lakeland Art Association has received a $20,000 Indiana Arts Commission grant to conduct a building capacity study.

The association has been developing the idea of an arts and culture center in the downtown Warsaw area, centering on the Eagles building on the corner of South Buffalo and East Market streets.

County highway supervisor Rob Ladson presented the board with reconstruction plans for county bridge 78 at CR 1000W, north of Ind. 19. Ladson said a wing and retaining wall are deteriorating.

Ladson said bid opening is set for July 17.

He also asked an ordinance for regulatory signs be advertised to place "no dumping" signage on South Barbee Drive.

The commissioners meet every other Tuesday at 9 a.m. in the county courthouse. Commissioners are Ron Truex, Avis Gunter and Brad Jackson.
