County Commissioners agreed this morning to apply for a grant on behalf of the Wawasee Trails Committee to complete work along Ind. 13. Commissioners signed a memorandum of understanding with the committee, under which the county will be the applicant for the grant but the committee will be responsible for the 20 percent match. Committee members told commissioners they hope to receive 80 percent of the estimated $1 to $1.2 million cost of the project to finish a stretch of trail along Ind. 13 between Harkless and Waco drives in Syracuse. The federal grant is administered by the Transportation Alternatives Program of the Indiana Department of Transportation. Committee member and grant writer Marsha Carey said they decided to apply for the grant at the suggestion of the Michiana Area Council of Government. Committee members said the 8- to 10-foot-wide trail would make it safer for foot traffic along the state highway. Also during the meeting, commissioners gave county Administrator Ron Robinson permission to request from the county Economic Redevelopment Commission $150,000 out of the Louis Dreyfus tax increment finance district in Claypool to pay for road work in that area. The request must be approved by the County Council. And commissioners approved a road vacation along Lake Wawasee in Turkey Creek township parallel to Waco Point Drive. The vacation of the segment of road of unknown ownership covers three adjacent 50-foot lots owned by petitioners Dennis and Mary Lou Hipskind, and was recommended by the Area Plan Commission.
