Volunteers with Special Olympics of Kosciusko County have collected a lot of T-shirts after 40 years of events. To celebrate those four decades and raise a little money for more, County Coordinator Becky Walls emptied her closet and County Treasurer Judy Weidner got out her needle and thread. The 19-square T-shirt quilt they created, featuring shirts from runs, icy plunges and bowling tournaments, will be auctioned off during the county chapter’s 40th celebration April 21 in Warsaw. The event is from 1 to 5 p.m. at Center Lake Pavilion. Activities include other silent and live auction items, a cake decorating contest, a corn toss and meal from Grill and Grate BBQ. State and regional coordinators also will participate in the 40th celebration. Other activities will include a 40-year photo album and a contest to guess how many jelly beans are in a jar. The event is free and the cost for the meal is $6.50. The quilt shows activities local athletes have enjoyed going to across the state, Weidner noted yesterday, while the middle square was donated by county founder Maxine Burcham. “We could probably make four quilts,” Weidner remarked. She also noted that money raised through the auction or donated at the event will help some of the 115 registered local athletes go to the state games in Terre Haute and other area events, or just go out for a meal sometime. “It all goes back to the athletes. We’re all volunteers, not paid; we do it because we love it,” she said. “We welcome anyone who’d like to help to volunteer. It’s very rewarding.”
