Posted

Kosciusko County schools clung mostly to the middle ranks of the state ISTEP results, according to a report released earlier this week by the Department of Education.

No one school corporation in the county ranked consistently in the same area; scores varied widely by grade.

For example, out of approximately 1,110 elementary schools whose third-graders took the ISTEP, Akron Elementary, in the Tippecanoe Valley school district, ranked 933rd, with a total of 42 percent of the 97 third-graders tested rating above state standard in math and English.

While Akron was the lowest-ranked in the county for third-graders, Atwood Elementary, in Warsaw Community Schools, was the highest, ranking 238th. Eighteen students at Atwood took the ISTEP in grade three, with 72 percent being above state standard.

Statewide, 60 percent of third-graders met state standards for both math and English.

In sixth grade, Eisenhower Elementary, Warsaw, ranked the highest - 50th out of approximately 675 schools. Of the 76 Eisenhower sixth-graders who took the ISTEP, almost 70 percent were above state standards.

At Tippecanoe Valley Middle School, 188 sixth-graders were tested, and 43 percent were above standard, ranking that class as 472nd in the state.

Most Kosciusko County sixth-grade classes ranked somewhere around the middle, such as Whitko, who was 344th, with 51 percent of 166 students above standard, or Lincoln Elementary, with 51 percent of 37 students, ranking 333rd.

Statewide, 48 percent of sixth-graders were above state standards in English and math.

In eighth grade, Edgewood Middle School, Warsaw, was the highest ranked in the county, at 79th out of approximately 442 schools tested in the state. Sixty-nine percent of the 193 students tested at Edgewood met state standards in both English and math.

Next highest in the county were Milford and Wawasee. At Milford, 65 percent of 81 students tested above state standard, ranking Milford 117th in the state.

Wawasee was ranked 153rd, with 62 percent of 208 eighth-graders above standard.

Statewide, 56 percent of all eighth-graders scored above standard for both English and math.

In the 10th grade, on the required graduation exam, Wawasee High School took top county honors, ranking 65th out of approximately 370 schools. At Wawasee, 245 10th-graders took the ISTEP+, with 69 percent passing.

Next best was Triton, ranking 84th in the state, with 67 percent of 84 students scoring above state standard.

Whitko High School was the lowest ranked in the county, at 318th in the state. Of the 134 10th-graders taking the ISTEP+, 41 percent scored above standard.

Statewide, 57 percent of 10th graders passed.
