County Goes With Winners In State, Federal Contests

Even early on it was apparent that Paul Helmke would hold the Republican nomination for United States Senate in Kosciusko County as he launched to an early lead.

Helmke ended up with 7,004 votes, overwhelming John Price and Peter Rusthoven, who received 1,866 and 1,663 votes respectively.

Helmke will go up against Democrat Evan Bayh, who was uncontested.

Daniel A. Holtz took the Republican nomination for United States Representative, 3rd District, from Dewey M. Conley, who trailed by 1,864 votes.

Conley, who held under 34 percent of the vote, commented this morning that he would be supporting Democrat Tim Roemer in the election this fall.

Roemer was uncontested for the Democratic nomination.

Steve Buyer, who was also uncontested, holds the Republican nomination for 5th District State Representative.

Morris L. Livengood won the Democratic nomination for 5th District State Representative, winning out against David F. Steele III, who only moved into the second place position near the end. Steele barely won out over Hugh P. Salisbury.

Joseph M. (Joe) Hilger was defeated by Harold (Potch) Wheeler by 165 votes for the Republican nomination for 17th District State Senate. He is now uncontested for the election in the fall.

Michael D. (Mike) Smith was uncontested for the 16th District State Representative and remains uncontested for the fall.

David A. Wolkins (R) will go up against Steven R. Haines (D) for 18th District State Representative, both of which were uncontested in the primary election.

William J. (Bill) Ruppel dominated the election for the Republican nomination for 22nd District State Representative. He walked away with 78 percent of the vote, leaving Brian Ken Haupert and Charles R (TD) Tiede with 14 percent and 7 percent respectively.

In other Kosciusko County uncontested elections:

Sue Ann Mitchell won the Republican nomination for county auditor.

Sharon R. Thompson won the Republican nomination for county assessor.

Avis B. Gunter won the Republican nomination for county commissioner Southern District and will run against Corbitt Gerald Hollon, who won the Democratic nomination for county commissioner Southern District.

Charles J. Tranter won the Republican nomination for county council, District One.

Harold D. Jones won the Republican nomination for county council, District Two, and will run against Jason Haines, who won the Democratic nomination for county council, District Two.

Bradley J. Tandy won the Republican nomination for county council, District Three.

John A. Kinsey won the Republican nomination for county council, District Four.
