County Buys Road Salt At Bargain Prices

Posted

Even though the temperature is near 90 degrees, it's already time to purchase salt for roads for the winter.

Tuesday, Kosciusko County Highway Superintendent and Engineer Rob Ladson recommended the county commissioners purchase 1,500 tons of salt from Cargil, Chicago, for $33.29 per ton.

"We're getting a good price," said Ladson of the bid, and it's the lowest price in five years.

The commissioners approved the purchase and the salt will be delivered upon order.

Ladson also recommended that yield signs in the Southbrook Subdivision, south side of Warsaw, be changed to stop signs. The subdivision is at CR 225S and Country Club Road. They were approved.

At the intersections of CRs 400N and 850W, and 750W and 1250S, the commissioners also approved adding stop signs based on Ladson's recommendation. The four-way intersections have only three stop signs. Ladson said adding the additional stop sign at each intersection will make the intersections more uniform with the rest of the county.

In other business, the commissioners:

• Approved the petition from Downtown Atwood LLC, doing business as Bambi's Roofing, to rezone ground from an agricultural district to an industrial II district. The property is on the north side of Old Road 30 in Prairie Township.

• Approved changing their Sept. 24 meeting to Sept. 23.

• Were told by county clerk Sharon Christner that the voting machines would be demonstrated at 8 a.m. in her office today.

Members of the Kosciusko County Commissioners present Tuesday were Ron Truex and chairwoman Avis Gunter. Brad Jackson was absent. The commissioners meet at 9 a.m. every other Tuesday in the county courthouse, Warsaw.
