Fake $100 bills were passed off at local businesses recently and police are looking for the person responsible. According to a police report, a counterfeit $100 bill was used to buy two candles at Bath and Body Works for $16. The customer received $84 in change. Another fake $100 bill was used at Subway for $10 in food items, with the customer receiving $90 in change. And yet another counterfeit $100 bill was used to buy $19.22 of merchandise from Pier 1 Imports, with the customer receiving $80.78 back. According to the police report, a witness told police the suspect vehicle is a dark gray Nissan Altima with a rounded trunk. Warsaw police put out a post on social media Monday night and said it is an active investigation. Police also provided tips for identifying counterfeit bills for those who work in the community and accept money. Police said all of the bills used in the round of fraud include this same serial number: DF45248991A. The bills also all appear to have the magnetic strip on the wrong side of the bill, and, upon holding the bill up to the light, the watermark is Alexander Hamilton, not Benjamin Franklin. Anyone who suspects they have been a victim is asked to call WPD at 574-372-9511.
