Johnson & Johnson, the parent company of DePuy, announced Tuesday that it's planning to lay off as many as 8,200 workers.

The company said the move will help save up to $1.7 billion in 2011.

When asked how many people at DePuy in Warsaw would be let go, the company declined to provide an exact number.

"We have notified employees at DePuy Orthopaedics about the decision to eliminate certain positions as part of the overall restructuring plans that Johnson & Johnson announced on Nov. 3. Individual notifications were made earlier this week," read a statement by DePuy Thursday. "These are difficult decisions under any circumstances and out of respect for our employees we are dealing with this issue privately and having discussions with the people who are affected by these actions. We are not providing a more detailed breakdown of our employee numbers or the number of individuals affected by these actions."

Elective surgery rates, hospital spending on capital equipment and spending on consumer products are all closely tied to U.S. unemployment, noted William Weldon, J&J's chief executive.

"And until we get unemployment under control, and people feel safe and comfortable where they are, I don't think they are going to be going forward and spending again" in some areas where they were previously spending, he told analysts on a conference call.
