Congressman Honors Triton Hoops Team At Board Meeting

BOURBON - A spokesman for Indiana Congressman Joe Donnelly presented a plaque Monday during the Triton School Board meeting to Triton basketball coach Jason Groves and his team for an outstanding season and their second place in the Indiana High School Athletic Association 1A championship.

Donnelly had a prior commitment for the evening and could not attend the meeting himself.Athletic Director Mason McIntyre recognized the Trojan cheerleaders and the basketball players, trainers and managers individually with certificates of participation.

Music director Peter Foster also honored his jazz band students for their efforts of support toward the athletic program. Triton also received the "All Music Award" from the state music organization. In order to receive this, the school must achieve "Gold Medal" status at a state level.

Foster said, "This just proves that little schools can achieve the same as big schools."

Foster thanked Trojan accompanist Betty Pope for her time and talent and the work that she does for free for the school.

The Triton members of the Indiana Academy of Parent Leadership, including Marcia Keiser, Susie Mullins, Tim and Evelyn Strichter and Jessica Oswalt, gave a presentation on the second-grade computer program.

The goals of the program were to increase mathematic achievement, increase parent participation and develop future parent leaders.

The board approved the recommendation of Tyler Berger as the girls tennis volunteer coach for the 2008-09 school year, and the resignation of Ty Zeigler as the high school Spanish teacher at the end of this school year.

The bid for the purchase of a new bus from Midwest Transit was approved.

Destination ImagiNation Parents Support requested permission to use the old gymnasium during the week of June 1-5 to set up for a fundraising garage sale to be held June 6. The board granted the request, as well as approving the Destination ImagiNation's Team trip to Knoxville, Tenn., May 19-23.

The board approved the transfer of $19,200 from the Rainy Day Fund to pay for the NEOLA board policy services.

Students Jose David and Joey Teeple spoke. David, an exchange student from Coatzacoalcos, Mexico, thanked the board for "the great opportunity for exchange students to meet beautiful people and form great friendships."

Teeple thanked the administration for allowing the senior trip to Washington, D.C.

"It was a great opportunity to bond as a class and to see some great historic sites that I won't be able to after I start college. I would like to encourage the board to approve future trips for upcoming seniors," Teeple said.

The board approved the state superintendent's revised school calendar for the 2009-10 school year. The changes are that all half days are now full day. There is no set date as of yet for parent/teacher conferences. Holiday and vacation days have no change.
