PIERCETON – Citing underage drinking, drug use and use at all hours of the day and night, the Pierceton Town Council was asked what it could do about the town’s skate park. A Pierceton resident who lives near the park asked the board to set up a surveillance camera and lock the park at night because of the noise and traffic that comes to the park at all hours. Previous complaints were lodged at past Pierceton town meetings. The resident, who didn’t state his name saying he’d fear retaliation by the teenagers who use the skate park, said he’s personally witnessed underage drinking, drug use and sexual activity go on at the park. He said he and his family have been threatened, and that racial slurs have been directed toward him as well. Pierceton Town Marshal Tim Sammons said the resident calls regularly about incidents at the park and there have been some arrests there of both kids from Pierceton and kids from outside of town. “He’s becoming frustrated and I understand that,” said Sammons. Town council president Jerry Kreger said since the town has recently taken over all the parks with the town’s new park board, he’d like to see that board decide what it can do at the skate park. The park board meets the first Wednesday of every month at 6:30 p.m. at the town hall. Protocol has been determined for the tornado siren in Pierceton. If the town is in the path of severe weather, the siren will go up and down in volume for three minutes. Once everything is clear, the siren will sound for a solid three minutes. The siren can be controlled through the county dispatch center as well as from the fire and police departments. There will be a vintage motorcycle show and swap from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. May 21 in town. It will take place near Brower Park off Ind. 13. For more information, call 574-551-2255 or e-mail jimvjmc@gmail.com Kim Rose reminded the board that Day of Caring is Aug. 17 and people have until May 27 to fill out applications for it. Rose said residents can contact her about it as she is once again the manager for Pierceton for the projects. Pierceton Days will be Aug. 5 and 6. The theme is “Take Me Back to the 1950s.” Paragon Medical’s Toby Buck will serve as grand marshall of the parade. Sammons announced DARE graduation will be June 6 at 5:30 p.m. at Pierceton Elementary School. On May 28, the Pierceton Lions Club will collect money for events it funds in front of the town’s fire station.
