Community Prepares For 20th Annual Free Thanksgiving Dinner

This year marks the 20th annual free community Thanksgiving dinner that will be held at the Center Lake Pavilion.

The event is Nov. 23 and is open to everyone.

"It is not just for the needy or unfortunate," said event co-chairman Jim Baker. "Of course, the needy and unfortunate are welcome."

Baker said a lot of elderly people show up because it is difficult for them to create a whole meal on their own.

"It's intended for anybody," said Baker.

Baker said the Thanksgiving dinner is hosted by the Elks Lodge and supported by many organizations. Baker co-chairs the event with Dan Brumfield. Last year's dinner served about 600 people and delivered meals to about 200 shut-ins. It included 28 turkeys, 80 pounds of ham, 14 gallons of green beans and 80 pies.

Baker said everything will be cooked Wednesday with the means of cooking provided by the American Legion. Cooking staff is headed by Mike and Alice Schooley.

"She's (Alice Schooley) a real key part to this," Baker said.

Baker said all the food is brought to Center Lake Pavilion Thursday morning and the deliveries are prepared. About 150 to 200 meals are delivered all over the county by 10 or 12 drivers. Baker said the delivery drivers try be out on their routes by 10:45 a.m.

Approximately 100 volunteers are involved in the event, including drivers and Wednesday cooks, said Baker.

"People who show up to help are not Elks members," Baker said. "There are just a lot of volunteers all over the county."

Baker also said leftovers go to charity organizations like the Salvation Army and the Boys and Girls Club.

Anybody who would like to place an order for delivery can call the Elks Lodge at 267-7802 after 3 p.m. any day prior to the Thanksgiving feast. People placing orders should leave their name, address and number of meals they are ordering.
