Sandra Williams would not have been able to have Thanksgiving this year if it had not been for Our Father’s House turkey and fixings giveaway. Williams, Silver Lake, and her son, Seth Ruggles, were one of the approximately 90 families who benefited Monday from Our Father’s House 16th annual Thanksgiving giveaway. Williams said her mother, Alice Rhoads, died last week of a stroke and she did not have money to buy Thanksgiving food because she had used her money on gas and food to visit her mother at Lutheran Hospital, Fort Wayne, after her mother had a stroke. “This food will bring my family closer, and we would not have had Thanksgiving if it had not been for this,” Williams said. Our Father’s House staff and volunteers met with those who signed up to receive the goods Monday afternoon. Those who signed up received turkeys, boxed potato mix, gravy mix, a pie and canned vegetables. Our Father’s House and St. Anne’ Church purchased the turkeys and provided the fixings, and Sacred Heart students had a food drive to collect the canned goods for the baskets. Roz Morgan, Our Father’s House founding director, said it is a blessing to provide the food to the community. Last year there were 83 food baskets distributed. “Holidays are notorious for being sad for some people who have lost people or jobs. It is precious how a basket with groceries can make a difference,” Morgan said.
