A Syracuse bar had its liquor license renewed Thursday after a couple of violations that dealt with poor bookkeeping.
Duffy’s Pub & Grub, 717 S. Huntington St., Syracuse, had its beer, wine and liquor license renewed by the Kosciusko County Alcoholic Beverage Commission Thursday afternoon by a vote of 4-0.
It had previously been fined and cited for having no copies of employee’s permits and operating on an expired permit.
The expired permit was for a gaming machine in the bar.
Michelle Halsey, part owner and manager of Duffy’s, said the employee whose paperwork wasn’t on file is no longer with the Syracuse establishment.
She also said that the expired permit was a result of some health issues on her part.
Halsey said she is typically very careful to make sure all the bar’s paperwork is up to date and on file.
Duffy’s paid a total of $450 in fines.
Halsey said the bar also had some tax issues but those have also been resolved.
State alcohol commissioner Dale Sturtz attended Thursday’s meeting.
Sturtz said commissioners try and make it to all 92 counties when they can to check up on local boards.
Sturtz will review one petition that came before the county Thursday.
United Deli in Pierceton, 7487 E. Old 30, applied for a beer and wine license.
The business, as described by owner Joe Dorsey, is a convenience store. The location also serves as a gas station.
Dorsey and his legal counsel, Lisa McKinney, said the location would be responsible when it came to alcohol sales and gave the board a letter documenting what United Deli would do to avoid any sales to minors.
As he always does, ABC member Elim Smith voted against granting the license as did board president Gordon Vanator.
“It’s just too easy for kids, children to come in and steal beer,” said Smith.
Board member Kenneth Johnson and excise officer April Tackett voted for the request.
Since the request is 2-2, it will go to the state commission.
Smith told Dorsey that the state will approve his license and that it won’t hold his process up too much.
With a 2-2 vote, United Deli isn’t allowed to operate on a letter of authority until they receive their license.
Sturtz explained after the meeting that unless there is a legal reason for denying a request, the state commission will approve a request.
