Columbia Drive Extension In Survey Phase At Winona

Posted
WINONA LAKE – Residents got an update on the Columbia Drive extension project during the Winona Lake Town Council meeting Tuesday.

Town Coordinator Craig Allebach said the project is currently in the surveying phase.

He said the extension will start at the stone house on Pierceton Drive, meander around a little and connect to Columbia Drive. There is a house that might have to come down if the project goes forward, but the town council will have to see what the survey says. Allebach said the town is in talks with the owner of the house in case that has to happen.

Allebach said he doesn’t want the extension to be an eye sore.

“It’ll be very aesthetically pleasing,” he said.

The reason behind the project is twofold.

“It’s just another access point for Winona Lake,” council member Tecy Banta said.

Allebach said it’s a public safety issue with some narrow street with street parking. It’ll be an additional way to get to downtown Winona Lake.

The town council also approved the purchase of a pull-behind dump trailer from Superior Landscaping, Warsaw, for $8,499.

Winona Lake Street Superintendent Tom Miller said it’ll provide additional brush pickup and other purposes.

“It’ll be a lot less expensive and a lot less maintenance than buying a pickup,” Miller said.

He said he solicited for four quotes, giving specifications of what he was looking for, but he got three quotes. Miller stated the truck from Superior was two feet smaller than the others, but he couldn’t justify the cost difference between Superior’s bid and the other twos.

The town council also learned of other events going on in Winona Lake in coming months, including the Memorial Day 5K at the Park at 9 a.m. Monday, the art fair in the village on June 1 and 2, and the Billy Sunday sculpture dedication at 4 p.m. today.
