Winona Literary Club Met
WINONA LAKE – Winona Literary Club opened its 2026–27 season on Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. at the Grace Village Robin Hood Community Center in Winona Lake. Fifteen members and three guests were present. This year’s theme is “Aging with Grace: Taking Time for Tea,” celebrating the opportunities each season of life brings to continue learning, growing, enjoying friendships and sharing with others.
The featured speaker was Nichole Bowers, program director for LifeWise Academy in Warsaw. Bowers shared how more than 27 years of working with children and families, together with her Christian faith and love for children, eventually led her to LifeWise. She explained how LifeWise offers voluntary, Bible-based character education to public school students during the school day through released time religious instruction. The Warsaw program began in September 2025 with just two students, grew to 52 by the end of its first school year and now has 108 students enrolled. Bowers gave the ladies a glimpse into a typical class, where Bible lessons, character traits and memory verses are combined with games and activities, and shared encouraging stories of the difference the program is making in the lives of local children. Her presentation sparked many questions and a lively discussion afterward.
A business meeting followed, with minutes, financial and committee reports, and plans for the new club year. The next meeting will be Oct. 7 at 1:30 p.m. Carol Volkers will present a book review, while Brian, Jack and Larry, a men’s singing and guitar trio, will provide the musical program. Ladies of the community are invited to come enjoy an afternoon of books, music, friendship, and fellowship. Hostesses for the meeting will be Phyllis Borkholder and Esther Eickhoff. To attend as a guest or inquire about membership, RSVP to Marcia Lee by Oct. 3 by calling 574-527-7687 and leaving a message.
The Winona Literary Club has been bringing women together since 1903 and is one of the few remaining clubs of its kind in the nation. Meeting six times in the fall and six times in the spring, the club offers much more than book reviews, with programs featuring musicians, community speakers, local businesses and other topics of interest. All women of the community are welcome to join them.
