Daughters Of The American Revolution Met June 23
The Agnes Pruyn Chapman Chapter of National Society Daughters of the American Revolution met June 23 at Little New York Restaurant in Leesburg.
Tammy Smith, of Big Brothers and Big Sisters, spoke about their program in Kosciusko County and how many children they help.
Regent Kathy Gawthrop called the meeting to order with the opening ritual, pledge of allegiance, preamble to the Constitution and American creed. Eleven members were present.
Thank-you cards to veterans on the Honor Flight were written by members and will be delivered.
Jennifer Simpson volunteered to be recording secretary and Maureen Mauzy volunteered to be corresponding secretary. The president general’s message was read regarding the 135th Congress and the many 250th celebrations. Sally DeWald gave the national defense report on Reckless, a mare purchased in 1952 and that served in the Korean War. The Celebrating Women report was given by Maureen Mauzy about Second Lt. Lina J. Stratton during World War II. She was an Army nurse from Memphis, Tenn.
The Indian minute was given by Gail Roberts about Master Sgt. Woodrow "Woody" Wilson Keeble, who was a member of the Sioux tribe who joined WWII in 1942 and also served in the Korean War. He earned the Medal of Honor for his heroic action plus the Distinguished Service Cross, the Silver Star, the Bronze Star, four Purple Hearts and the Combat Infantry Man Award.
Conservation minute was given by Lori Townsend on pollinator protection. Supporting bees and butterflies are indispensable in food and biodiversity preservation.
The treasurer’s report was given by Janice Cox. Susan Creamer read the minutes from the April chapter meeting. The minutes were approved as written. Gawthrop gave a Revolutionary War history lesson on the Battle of Saratoga and Benedict Arnold.
Committee reports were given. The 250 Committee of Shirley Smith, Simpson, Roberts, Christy Adams and Mauzy reported the Freedom Fest parade was scheduled on opening day of the county fair July 12. The Kosciusko Community Fair Parade invited the rained-out Freedom Fest Parade participants to join in their parade. The Pierceton parade was July 18. They had a vehicle and float in celebration of America 250 and the only Kosciusko County Revolutionary War Patriot, Adrain Anglin. Funds are being collected to purchase a plaque for the Anglin gravesite at Stoney Point Cemetery near Clunette.
Smith has volunteered to chair the Volunteer Information Specialist committee. The bylaws committee of Townsend, Smith, Mauzy and Simpson will be meeting to update the chapter bylaws.
Indiana State DAR awarded the chapter two Lighting The Way Awards in May: Presenting a Financial Award for DAR Good Citizens and Submitting a Chapter Winner in the DAR Good Citizens state contest.
Gawthrop announced the following events: the district meeting was scheduled for northeast Indiana in Huntington on Wednesday, Aug, 5. The attendees were Smith, Mauzy and Simpson. The “America’s Time Capsule” has been officially sealed and was buried at Independence National Historical Park on July 4 to be reopened in 2076. Inside the capsule are contributions from all three branches of the U.S. federal government, all 50 states, Washington, D.C., and five U.S. territories, America250 tentpole programs, as well as select national partners and institutions whose contributions reflect the people, places, ideas and innovations shaping the United States at 250 years. The William Tuffs Chapter in Middlebury had a marker dedication ceremony on July 25 for Boston Tea Party participant William Tuffs. The Bloomington Chapter/Monroe County had a dedication of America 250 Patriot Plaque on July 11.
The next meeting will be at Salvatori’s Restaurant in Warsaw Aug. 25 at noon.

Bridge Was Played At SPEC
NORTH WEBSTER – Bridge was played at SPEC at the North Webster Community Center.
On Tuesday, Helen Strang came in first and Jane Eyler came in second.
On Thursday, Jean Cowan came in first and Jerry Hetrick came in second.

Wednesday Bridge Met
Wednesday Night Bridge Group met at Grace Village Wednesday.
The winners were Tom Anderson, Nancy Witt, John Wagley, Jim White and Jim Levandis.
The group welcomes bridge players of all skill levels to join them from 5:30 to 9 p.m. on Wednesdays at Grace Village. If interested, call Wagley at 574-268-1330.
